If your business processes personal data in Jamaica, the deadline to register as a data controller with the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) is fast approaching. Under the Data Protection Act (DPA) 2020, all data controllers must be registered by November 30, 2024, for the current registration year (2023/2024).
Who Needs to Register?
Any business or organization processing personal data (like customer or employee information) must register. Operating without registration is an offence under the DPA, with potential fines and penalties.
Why Register?
Registered data controllers receive an e-Certificate confirming compliance, valid until the end of the registration year on November 30, 2024. After this, all registered businesses must renew their registration for the 2024/2025 year starting on December 1, 2024.
How to Register
Registration is completed through the My OIC Portal on the OIC website, where you’ll find details for fee payment and application tracking.
Act Now to Avoid Delays
The OIC is prioritizing applications, but early registration helps avoid last-minute issues. Register today to ensure your business stays compliant.
